Keep reading for the full breakdown on AI Overviews strategy — everything you need to know is covered below.
The reason is not far to seek. Google now answers questions itself using AI Overviews, and when users read the summary and get what they need, they simply leave. No click.
Zero-click was around 60% in 2024. In 2026 it is around 68% in US (SparkToro). When AI Overview appears, click through rates (CTR) on organic results can drop by 60%. This is not theory anymore. It is what is happening to traffic now. Smart sites stopped complaining. They changed strategy.
Smart sites are responding to zero-click by tracking impressions vs clicks separately, adding depth AI cannot summarise, building tools and calculators, and capturing higher-intent visits with stronger commercial paths. They accept fewer total clicks but protect revenue by making remaining clicks convert better.
1. They Stopped Watching Only Rankings
Old formula: rank high = traffic. This equation is broken.
Smart sites now split reporting:
- Impressions (are we still shown?)
- CTR (are we clicked when shown?)
- Clicks (what actually lands?)
- Conversion on remaining clicks
If impressions rise but clicks fall, that is AI Overview effect. Not penalty. They no longer panic and rewrite entire site. They isolate which queries now trigger Overviews.
What you should do: Open Search Console this week. Filter your top 20 pages and compare impressions vs clicks last 90 days. The pages with gap are your zero-click victims.
2. They Add What AI Cannot Summarise
AI Overviews are good at basic definitions and steps. They are weak at:
- First-hand experience (“We tried CAC registration in Lagos vs Abuja, here is difference in 5 days”).
- Current naira figures with date (“CAC BN registration cost as of August 2026”).
- Original data from real work (“We tracked 47 FIRS filings – average delay is 8 days”).
- Local constraints AI misses
Generic page will say: “CAC registration is affordable and fast.”
Smart site page will say: “CAC business name in Lagos: N26,000 official fee + N5k agent, 3-7 working days in August 2026. Rejection reason we saw last month: name too close to existing.”
Second one gets cited. First one gets summarised and ignored.
What you should do: Take your top 3 service pages. Add one paragraph of real observation only someone in Nigeria would know and add date.
3. They Build Click Magnets
Some content will always be summarised. So smart sites stopped relying only on articles.
What still earns clicks even when Overview appears:
- Calculator (Tax calculator, CAC cost calculator)
- Template (invoice template, CAC name search checklist)
- Tool (fee checker)
- Comparison table with current figures.
- Strong commercial page with clear next step – “Get quote” “Book call”
User may accept AI answer for “what is CAC registration” but they will still click for “CAC registration cost calculator Lagos”.
What you should do: Add one simple tool to your highest-traffic informational page. Even a table with current fees and “last updated” beats paragraph.
4. They Capture Higher-Intent Clicks
Traffic down but conversion up. This is crazy but many smart sites report this.
Why? Person who clicks after reading AI Overview already knows basics. They want depth, proof, or to buy. So they are more ready.
Smart sites changed CTA:
Old: “Learn more about our services”
New: “We filed 120 CAC registrations last quarter in Lagos. See real timeline + get quote today”
They also watch branded search. When AI mentions your name without link, some users still search your brand. That shows up as direct or branded organic, not referral.
What you should do: Rewrite closing of your top pages from educational to action with proof.
5. They Test the Real SERP, Not Just Dashboard
Dashboard lies but real SERP tells truth. Smart sites search their core queries in incognito, on mobile, and note:
- Does AI Overview appear?
- What does it say?
- Which 3 sources are cited?
- Would a motivated user still need to click?
If Overview fully satisfies query, they do not fight for that click. They move page to support commercial intent or they add unique value.
What you should do: Search 10 client questions you want to rank for. Screenshot Overviews and you will see pattern in 30 minutes.
Common Mistakes
- Assuming stable rankings mean stable traffic will return
- Publishing more thin “what is” posts AI can fully answer.
- Measuring success by sessions alone, ignoring lead quality.
- Never checking mobile SERP (where 77% zero-click happens).
- Thinking it is temporary Google test
Google answering question instead of linking changes game. You cannot stop Overviews but you can decide what content to protect.
Stop writing what AI can summarise in 3 lines. Start writing what only you can say like current naira fees, real timelines in Lagos and Abuja, common rejection reasons, tools that save time.
Start with one page this week. Check its impressions vs clicks, add one local observation and one clear action. Make sure you measure not just traffic, but leads from remaining visits.
